My son, Michael, was a petty officer in the Navy and the only fine artist in the Navy.  He was killed while on duty in the Navy Command Center in the Pentagon on 9/11.  His works hung throughout the Navy wing of the Pentagon when he -- and they were destroyed.  He's left us a tremendous legacy and his first posthumous show will be at the Montserrat Gallery at 584 Broadway, NYC from December 9 through 28.  MORE.  He had a dream.  He wanted a building where he'd have a studio, I'd have something with music, and we'd live (separate apartments).  I am making it come true as far as possible, and I cus an emaile help from anyone and everyone.  First I need to raise the money to get the building.  Michael's work (prints) will be hung on one floor and that floor will function as a memorial for Michael and a school for advanced techniques in fine art.  Also, I am finally going back to music and have been practicing my butt off.  My "something with music" will be a place for me to perform (when I want to) and for musicians to jam, rehearse, whatever and I have worked a way around the union problem.  It will also get amateurs and pros together.  It already has a name.  PA-ers can help make this happen.

I was Carol Miller at PA, majoring in music. I graduated in 1962, and went on to Queens College with a major in Instrumental Music. Got my MS in Music Education at the University of Illinois (Champagne). Went to work in NYC teaching orchestra and music history, spent more time doing the same in Los Angeles, and wound up my teaching career with 20 1/2 more years in Tulsa, Ok! I'll be celebrating my 30th Anniversary to my wonderful husband, Ralph, next March, but in the mean time, we live in SaddleBrooke, Az. I love playing a lot of golf, flying our little single-engine Commander, giving piano lessons to older folks (55-83 yrs), and clogging. Although I have no children of my own, I am the proud step-mom to 5 grown children, and am grandma to 10 grandkids, and also have 3 great-grandchildren. We're scattered all over this wonderful country, and enjoy visiting each other when we can. What else?? I got my private pilot's license in 1994, and have enjoyed flying a Grumman Tiger (when I lived in Tulsa) and now a Commander 112.

I've also gone back to practicing the piano with a vengeance, and love the fact that I now have the very instrument that I learned to play on in the first place -- a 1928 Sohmer Baby Grand.
I loved the time that I spent at PA. Remember Julius Grossman? Shirley Katz and Florence Schwager? Samuel Tolmach? They were terrific people, all of them. I owe them a great deal. Would love to hear from a PA alumnus. By the way, SaddleBrooke is just north of Tucson in the beautiful Catalina Mountains. We're all retired folks, but you'd never know it from the way we work and play so hard. Happy Thanksgiving,

Dorothy (Scharff) Thornton  Class of 1962  Graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with a B.A. in  English.  Attended graduate school at Boston State College.  Currently live in Brookline, MA and work for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Alas, never did anything in the theatre other than act in college plays and help direct my kid's school plays! Have three children - Chuck, Sean and Kimberly. And one very hyper yellow lab, Chloe! Have been a widow since 1986. I've lost contact with PA classmates long ago - think of them often!
